Building Alerts

Building-focused alerts when local conditions may matter to a building.

Early access. Building Alerts is not operating yet and no alerts are being sent.

How Building Alerts works

  1. A local condition. An official warning or recorded condition for the area you confirm, such as extreme cold or heavy rain.
  2. What it may touch. The building systems and parts that condition acts on.
  3. A few things to check. Plain steps someone can check or record, with links into the ICI tools.

Local conditions describe an area, not your building. They never change a Condition Profile result, and they may not affect every building in the same way.

Three examples

  • Extreme cold

    May touch Heating, plumbing and exterior walls

    Check Where water lines run through unheated spaces or exterior walls, and whether there is a backup heat source.

  • Heavy rain

    May touch Roof drainage, the sump pump and below-grade spaces

    Check From a safe spot, that visible drains and downspout outlets are clear, and when the sump pump was last tested.

  • Freeze-thaw

    May touch Exterior walls, sealants, flashings, foundations and drainage

    Watch Photograph and date sealants, masonry joints and flashings from the ground, and note where water sits against the building.

What an alert is intended to contain

  • the local condition and the area you confirmed;
  • the building systems and parts it may touch;
  • a few things to check or record, in plain language;
  • links into the ICI tools that go further;
  • a reminder that official weather and emergency warnings come from the public authority for your area.

What Building Alerts is not

  • Not an official weather or emergency warning. Follow the public authority for your area for warnings and emergency instructions.
  • Not a prediction of damage, a claim or a loss, and not a guarantee that damage will be prevented.
  • Not a change to a Condition Profile. Only information about the building itself can do that.
